Build a Better Bedtime Wind-Down Routine
Share
RELAXATION & RECOVERY
A wind-down routine is a repeatable transition from daytime activity to bedtime.
It does not need to be elaborate. The goal is to reduce stimulation and create cues that the active part of the day is ending.
BUILD A ROUTINE THAT FITS YOUR LIFE
01 / START SMALL
Start with a consistent transition
Choose a realistic point before bedtime to shift into quieter activities. Consistency is more useful than designing a routine so complicated that you rarely follow it.
02 / SET THE MOOD
Lower the stimulation
Bright screens, intense work, emotionally activating content, and vigorous late activity can make it harder to create a quiet transition for some people. Consider dimmer light and calmer activities as bedtime approaches.
03 / FIND YOUR PRACTICE
Choose one or two calming practices
Options can include quiet reading, gentle stretching, slow breathing, guided imagery, progressive relaxation, or a warm shower. Relaxation practices are generally considered safe for healthy people, but evidence for relaxation alone as a treatment for chronic insomnia is limited.
04 / CHOOSE TOOLS WITH INTENTION
Keep products in perspective
A sound machine, massage device, comfortable bedding, or other relaxation product can support the environment you are creating, but the product is not the routine itself. Build the habit first, then decide whether a tool meaningfully supports it.
05 / KNOW WHEN TO ASK
When to seek more help
Persistent insomnia or significant daytime impairment deserves more than a new bedtime routine. Evidence-based treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia may be appropriate under professional guidance.
